Make acrylics work for you

Acrylics' fast drying is great for layering — but tricky when you want to blend or your paint dries on the palette. Here's how to keep them workable, plus care tips. Especially useful in India's warm, dry heat.

Why acrylics dry so fast

Acrylics dry as the water evaporates — and in warm, dry, or breezy conditions (like much of India), that happens quickly. A few simple tricks slow it down.

Use a stay-wet palette

A stay-wet palette (with a damp layer under the paint) keeps your colours usable for hours or even days. You can buy one or make one with a sponge and baking paper in an airtight box.

Mist your paint with water

Keep a spray bottle handy and lightly mist your palette (and even the canvas) to slow drying. Don't overdo it — too much water thins the paint.

Add a retarder medium

A retarder (slow-dry medium) mixed into your paint extends the working and blending time — perfect if you love to blend like oils.

Work in smaller amounts

Squeeze out only as much paint as you'll use soon, and mix smaller batches, so less dries unused on the palette.

Caring for your brushes

  • Never let acrylic dry in the brush — it sets hard and ruins it.
  • Rinse brushes in water often while painting, and rest them flat (not on the tips).
  • Wash thoroughly with water and mild soap after each session, reshape, and dry flat.

Storing your acrylic paints

  • Keep tubes and bottles tightly capped so they don't dry out.
  • Wipe the cap thread before closing so it doesn't stick.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct heat and sunlight.
  • If paint thickens a little, a few drops of water can revive it (don't overdo it).
