Learn from common mistakes
Every acrylic painter makes mistakes when starting out — it's part of learning. Knowing the common ones helps you improve faster. Here are the big ones and how to avoid them.
1. Letting paint dry in your brushes
Acrylic sets hard and ruins brushes. Rinse often while painting and wash thoroughly after every session. This is the single most important habit.
2. Forgetting acrylics dry darker
Acrylics often dry a touch darker than they look wet (colour shift). Account for this when mixing, and test a colour on scrap if you're unsure.
3. Working too slowly when blending
Acrylics dry fast, so slow blending leads to hard edges. Work quickly, in small areas, or use a retarder, mist, or a stay-wet palette to extend your time.
4. Using too much water
Thinning paint with lots of water weakens it and can stop it bonding properly. To thin, use a little water or a proper medium instead of drowning the paint.
5. Using too little paint (poor coverage)
Scrimping gives thin, patchy results. Use enough quality, well-pigmented paint for solid coverage — cheap, watery paint often needs many coats.
6. Not sealing the palette
Leaving paint open on a dry palette wastes it as it dries. Use a stay-wet palette or mist regularly to keep colours usable.
7. Skimping on white
You use white more than any other colour for tints and highlights. Always keep a large tube.
8. Choosing poor-quality, fading paint
Cheap, low-lightfastness paint can fade and disappoint. Use richly pigmented, lightfast colours for vivid work that lasts.
