Gather the right supplies
One of the joys of acrylics is how little you need to start. A few well-chosen supplies will get you painting beautifully. Here's the essential list.
1. Acrylic paints
Start with a small set or a few tubes: a red, yellow, blue, white, and maybe black. White is used most, so get a larger tube. You can mix a wide range from these.
2. Brushes
Synthetic brushes are ideal for acrylics — durable and easy to clean. Start with a few shapes and sizes: a flat, a round, and a filbert.
3. A surface to paint on
Canvas, canvas boards, or acrylic paper all work well. Canvas boards are affordable and perfect for beginners and practice. Acrylics also work on wood, card, and more.
4. A palette
For mixing colours. Because acrylics dry fast, a "stay-wet" palette (or even a plate misted with water) keeps your paint workable for longer.
5. Water jars
Two jars — one to rinse brushes, one for clean water to thin paint. Change them regularly.
6. Rags or paper towels
For wiping brushes and cleaning up.
7. A palette knife (optional)
Great for mixing colours and for applying thick, textured paint.
8. Mediums (optional)
As you grow, mediums let you change the paint — a retarder slows drying for blending, a gloss/matte medium changes the finish, and gel adds body. Not essential to start, but fun to explore.
Start simple, add later
Begin with paints, brushes, a surface, a palette, and water. Add the rest as you grow. Quality basics make learning far more enjoyable.
